[kisetsu - seasons]

When Benedikta Fink, at that time teacher at the Music School Gosau, asked me if I would create a show with student of the school which will be shown at the summer festival, I was thrilled and excited about the new challenge of working with kids. When she told me about her idea to work with poems by Rainer Maria Rilke, I soon after reading her suggestions knew that this wouldn't fit for me. But I liked the idea of using poems and naturally I ended up to use Haiku.

Haiku as the starting point for the creation of images  were chosen not only because of the commonality of this form of poetry and ButohDance by their origin from Japan. But also because above all traditional haiku indicate with the kigo a season.

Furthermore the texts of haiku are open and not concluded and become complete only in the experience of the reader. Thus, the close relation to Butoh which can also only be comprehend by the experience is clearly visible.

Soon later, Benedikta Fink told me, that the principal would like to make a festival based on the four seasons. The typical traditional Austrian dances and music were shown. So it was clear that my concept would be realized. After introducing Butoh to the whole class, 10 girls in the age 11-13 have registered to participate.

The performance started with winter [fuyu]. After spring [haru], summer [natsu] and autumn [aki] winter should be danced again at the end. However, the festival has not provided for the part for the winter to be shown again.  Thus, the repetition was not carried out.

At this end-of-year workshop, the four seasons in their eternal cycle of coming and going are taken as a symbol of the approaching end and the beginning of the new year. The whole workshop is only the creation of a performance based on the four traditional Japanese haiku introduced above.

The performance started with winter [fuyu]. After spring [haru], summer [natsu] and autumn [aki] winter should be danced again at the end. Due to lack of time this last part was not carried out.
