Butohresque – Vienna Butoh Festival focuses on the origins of Butoh, which go back to Hijikata Tatsumi and his companion Ohno Kazuo and Ohno Yoshito, and to the early developments up to the so-called second generation, whose representatives include Maro Akaji with Dairakudakan, Murobushi Ko and Amagatsu Ushio with Sankai Juku.
Side acts embrace the -esque [French ‘in the manner of‘ or ‘-like’] and open up space for current trends not only in Butoh dance but in dance in general. Here the festival presents modern movements, artists of newer generations who have developed away from these origins and/or artists who incorporate ideas and elements of Butoh dance into their work and refer to it, but do not want to be classified in this category themselves.
For the fifth edition of Butohresque – Vienna Butoh Festival we could find a new partner theater to host the performances. We are very happy that Butohresque Vol. 5 will take place at the off-theater in the heart of Vienna: https://off-theater.at
We are grateful and overwhelmed by all the applications we have received. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the artists who submitted their proposals. Unfortunately, we were only able to accept a small selection this time.
After a thorough and careful review of all projects, we are pleased to present the final calendar:

Join us here for the next few weeks until the festival starts and get all the information for an exiting butohresque event!
